Ephesians 4:29 – NASB vs. HCSB vs ESV

Ephesians 4:29 NASB  Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.

Ephesians 4:29 HCSB (2004) No rotten talk should come from your mouth, but only what is good for the building up of someone in need, in order to give grace to those who hear.

Ephesians 4:29 HCSB  (2010) No foul language is to come from your mouth, but only what is good for building up someone in need, so that it gives grace to those who hear.

Ephesians 4:29 ESV  Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

Sometimes the wording of a certain version versus others is not necessarily wrong, right, better or worse. Sometimes it is just “personal.” Of the four versions listed above, I prefer the 2004 version because it “hit” me. Plus when I checked the dictionary, “rotten” was the first definition I saw for sapros. Another thing I like about the HCSB (both editions) and the ESV, is the use of “building up” instead of “edification.” Sometimes I think there are just too many “church words” in translations. No one goes around talking about “edification” unless it is a church setting.
