Colossians 3:17 – “In the Name”

“In the name of the Lord Jesus” (Col.3:17) is misunderstood and misapplied by too many. There they state that “in the name of the Lord Jesus” means “giving Him the glory”. First, focus on the title “Lord”. That implies Jesus is our authority because he is our Master. And second, while it is true that our actions are designed to glorify Jesus; it is because “in the name” means we are acting with His authority, approval, and agency. We can’t do something without those, and it give glory to Jesus as our Lord.

Colossians 3:17 (HCSB) And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

As context means everything, we can see what “in the name of Jesus means” here is Colossians by looking at 3:11-12 (HCSB) “Christ is all and in all. Therefore, God’s chosen ones….” In Jesus’ name means He is in us and we are acting as God’s chosen ones. We are his agents, ambassadors or emissaries. That means we are acting with authority and approval. Go back to Colossians 1:18 and we see Jesus is “the head of the body, the church.” We get our marching orders for glory from Jesus!
