Biblical truth standing on its spiritual head to get our eternal attention.

Acts 5:8 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV

Acts 5:8 NASB  And Peter responded to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for such and such a price?” And she said, “Yes, that was the price.”

Acts 5:8 HCSB  “Tell me,” Peter asked her, “did you sell the field for this price?” “Yes,” she said, “for that price.”

Acts 5:8 ESV  And Peter said to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much.” And she said, “Yes, for so much.”

The NASB is sometimes criticized for being too wordy. Here they are guilty as charged. “such and such a price” is from one Greek word (tosoutos). The HCSB has “price” which is not as literal as the ESV’s “so much.” Another problem with the NASB is that it uses “price” to translate two different Greek words in the same context (v.3 – time).
