Are We Raising Emotional Scam Artists?
If you have a phone, email address, watch TV, or have any contact with anyone (that covers everyone), you have had experiences with scam artists. Churches are constantly being barraged because people expect good will if not straight up naivety from tender hearted people. TV evangelists work the same angle from the opposite direction. No child grows up being encouraged, “When you grow up, sell fake car warranties and pretend to live in Nigeria!” But….are parents raising emotional scam artists?
Scam artists lie using fake stories that will either pull on your heart strings to get to your purse strings, or manipulate your own greed and laziness against you, making you think you are getting something for nothing.
When parents allow their children to lie to get away with things through their telling elaborate stories and shifting blame; they are raising emotional scam artists.
When parents allow their children to keep misbehaving, bribing their behavior in exchange for temporary false peace; instead of taking the harder, time-consuming course of disciplining them, they are raising emotional scam artists.
Pick any Bible verses about discipline, lying, laziness, irresponsibility, which applies to adult scam or con artists. Then apply it to yourself as a parent and your children. Don’t raise emotional scam artists. These children will then grow up having emotionally damaging, scamming marriages and relationships.
When I picked up the phone and immediately recognized the caller attempting to con me, I repeatedly told him, “You know this is a scam. You shouldn’t be doing this to people. That’s not nice. You need Jesus”. After several times of saying this, he hung up.
Now the next time your child throws a temper tantrum, lies, blames others, or tries to emotionally scam you, repeat the above – “You know this is a scam. You shouldn’t be doing this to people. That’s not nice. You need Jesus”.
