Biblical truth standing on its spiritual head to get our eternal attention.

Esther 1:8 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV

Esther 1:8 NASB The drinking was done according to the law, there was no compulsion, for so the king had given orders to each official of his household that he should do according to the desires of each person.

Esther 1:8 HCSB and no restraint was placed on the drinking. The king had ordered every wine steward in his household to serve as much as each person wanted.

Esther 1:8 ESV And drinking was according to this edict: “There is no compulsion.” For the king had given orders to all the staff of his palace to do as each man desired.

The NASB and ESV are very similar. They both imply that the drinking is not required. The HCSB reads vastly different. It reads like the NET:

Esther 1:8 There were no restrictions on the drinking, for the king had instructed all of his supervisors that they should do as everyone so desired.

According to the HCSB, the compelling is not forcing someone to drink, but rather restricting them to how much.
