Romans 1:18-20 – Necessary Inference

When discussing how to establish authority, some have given up on commands, examples, and necessary inference (or better implication). If you see the acronym CENI, that is what this is. One common way to disparage it is to ask the seemingly unanswerable question, “Necessary to who?” The point then is made, what is necessary to one, is not necessary to another. That is why I prefer “necessary implication,” over “necessary inference.” It places the necessity on the one making authority maker, not the authority follower. What is necessarily implied is necessary whether or not I infer it. Truth does not depend upon me recognizing it as truth. It is objective, not subjective. However, to help those who do not any longer see the importance of necessary inference, let me try to help in a very simple fashion. In Romans 1:18-20, we find that nature implies God’s “invisible attributes” therefore implying the existence of God. Therefore, us having faith – the very foundation of our salvation – is based upon necessary inference.
