Biblical truth standing on its spiritual head to get our eternal attention.

1 John 2:6 – NASB vs HCSB vs ESV

NASB (6) the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.

HCSB (6) The one who says he remains in Him should walk just as He walked.

ESV (6) whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

One of the arguments presented by the translators of the HCSB is that it is terser in its language than other translations. Here for example the Greek has 13 words in 1 John 2:6. The NASB has 19; the ESV has 17; but the HCSB has only 14. While the NASB is considered one of the most accurate “word for word” translations (and it is), it is also known for adding more than one English word per Greek when less can do. So here is an example of the HCSB being more “word for word” (14 English for 13 Greek) than either the NASB or the ESV.
