1 John 1:10 – NASB vs HCSB vs ESV
1 John 1:10
NASB (10) If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.
HCSB (10) If we say, “We don’t have any sin,” we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
ESV (10) If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us
The phrase that is different between the HCSB and the other two is “don’t have any sin” and “have not sinned.” The Greek here is perfect active indicative. The point is an action completed in the past but still has current effect. So “have not sinned (and) don’t have any sin” actually translates both parts of the perfect. One focuses rightfully on the past action; the other the current condition. I prefer the NASB and ESV, because “have not sinned” focuses more clearly on both the past and the present.
