Matthew – Two Throne Room Scenes
Two Throne Room Scenes
Matthew shares in his gospel two unorthodox “throne room” scenes. Both involving an identity question, Jews, Gentiles, bowing, and three “gifts”.
The first scene is Matthew 2.
1. The question asked is, “Where’s is he who is born king of the Jews?
2. The Jews were the chief priests and scribes.
3. The Gentiles are the Magi.
4. They fall down and worship Jesus.
5. Their three gifts are gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
The second scene is Matthew 27.
1. The question asked is, ‘Are you king of the Jews?”
2. The Jews were the chief priests and elders.
3. The Gentiles are Roman soldiers.
4. They mockingly bow before Jesus.
5. Their three gifts are a crown of thorns, a scarlet robe, and a scepter.
The first scene ends with Jesus escaping death. The second scene ends with Jesus not escaping death initially but then so through the resurrection (Matthew 28).
The “Son” is the King. Will we bow and bring our unworthy selves as gifts?
