John 2-3; 18-19 – Bookends
John 2-3 & John 18-19 – Acting as bookends, these two stories have more in common than I realized. In John 2 Jesus cleans the temple of the sacrifice sellers. History tells us Annas owned and operated these and he is introduced in John 18. In John 2 Jesus takes out a whip. In John 19 Jesus is whipped. In John 3 and John 18-19, the scenes take place at night. In John 3 Nicodemus interviews Jesus. In John 18-19 Annas, Caiaphas and Pilate interrogate Jesus. In John 3 the topic is the kingdom of God. In John 18 Pilate and Jesus discuss the Kingdom. In John 3 Jesus says God gave His only Son. In John 19 Jesus’ enemies say He has to be put to death because He claimed to be the Son of God. In John 3 Jesus said He is to be lifted up. In John 18 and 19 Jesus is to be lifted up in crucifixion. Both John 2 and 19 mention the Passover.
