Daniel 1-6 – Two Types of Narratives

Two types of Narratives in Daniel (Brueggemann, An Introduction to the Old Testament, p.352):

  • Interpretation Story:
  1. The king has a vision or dream.
  2. The wise men of his court cannot interpret its meaning.
  3. The hero emerges and gives the interpretation.
  4. The hero is awarded.
  5. The king learns that ht hero’s God is all-powerful.
  • Deliverance Story
  1. The king uses an order that commands Jews to worship an idol.
  2. The hero or heroes are discovered disobeying.
  3. The refuse to comply with the order and are prepared for execution
  4. They are delivered.
  5. They are rewarded, their enemies punished.
  6. The king learns that ht hero’s God is all powerful. (P. Davis, 1998, 51-52)

Looking at these assessments, I see this great lesson: Live faithfully in an uncertain world because it is certain that our God is all-powerful.
