Jeremiah 14:4 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV

NASB “Because the ground is cracked, For there has been no rain on the land; The farmers have been put to shame, They have covered their heads.

HCSB The ground is cracked since no rain has fallen on the land. The farmers are ashamed; they cover their heads.

ESV Because of the ground that is dismayed, since there is no rain on the land, the farmers are ashamed; they cover their heads.

Both the NASB and HCSB read “cracked” for chathath; wherein the ESV reads, “dismayed,” which is a poetic personification of the ground. Chathath can mean either; “cracked” is literal while “dismayed” is figurative. A literal and poetic translation could have been used which is “shattered” which not only sounds worse than cracked, it can also describe an emotional state.
