Exodus 20:11; Deuteronomy 5:15 – The 10 Commandments In Christ

The meaning of the Sabbath rest in the first giving of the 10 Commandments is different than in Moses’ second reiteration. In Exodus 20 it is based upon God resting after creation. In Deuteronomy 5 it is based upon God freeing Israel from slavery. These are not two distinct ideas although they are two distinct historical realities. In fact they find their connection in Christ who is our Sabbath rest (Heb.4). Jesus frees us from the slavery of sin (John 8:31-36) while making us new creatures in His new creation (2 Cor.5:17). Let us keep holy the Sabbath rest in Jesus.
