Ecclesiastes 2:2 – Laughter

Laughter is of God.  No other of God’s creations laugh, as do humans.  God Himself laughs and has a sense of humor (i.e., just look at the platypus!).  Humor though must have its place, as we have all witnessed, endured, or participated in ill-timed humor.  Humor must also have its place within our lives – humor is not the answer to life’s search for meaning.

True, we can use humor effectively.  Humor eases tensions, warms relationships, and emphasizes lessons.  Humor can also be used as a defense mechanism, to hide hurt from others or even ourselves.  In other words, while humor might help temporarily, it can mask pain even from the one suffering from said pain.

There is a wicked aspect to humor also, and I am not referring to “coarse jesting” (Eph.5:4). No, I am referring to humor not as a tool, but as a weapon.

Humor, when not guarded carefully leads to “madness.”  The word here means, “pride.”
