Biblical truth standing on its spiritual head to get our eternal attention.

Matthew 5-7 – The Sermon on the Mount and James

How much influence did Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount have on the early church? James, who wrote one of the first written NT books, probably written by Jesus’ fleshly brother, borrowed, expanded, and applied it comprehensively. So influenced was James, it would be beneficial to compare the two.

Matthew 5:10-12 NASB  “Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  (11)  “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.  (12)  “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

James 1:2 NASB  Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, (3)  knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.

Matthew 5:48 NASB  “Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

James 1:4 NASB  And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Matthew 7:7-8 NASB  “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  (8)  “For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.

James 1:5 NASB  But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

Matthew 7:26-27 NASB  “Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.  (27)  “The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell–and great was its fall.”

James 1:6 NASB  But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. (7)  For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, (8) being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

Matthew 6:29 NASB  yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these.

James 1:11 NASB  For the sun rises with a scorching wind and withers the grass; and its flower falls off and the beauty of its appearance is destroyed; so too the rich man in the midst of his pursuits will fade away.

James 1:12 NASB  Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

Matthew 6:13 NASB  ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.]’

James 1:13 NASB  Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.

Matthew 5:14-16 NASB  “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden;  (15)  nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  (16)  “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Matthew 5:45 NASB  so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

Matthew 7:9-11 NASB  “Or what man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone?  (10)  “Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he?  (11)  “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!

James 1:17 NASB  Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.

Matthew 7:16-20 NASB  “You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they?  (17)  “So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit.  (18)  “A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit.  (19)  “Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.  (20)  “So then, you will know them by their fruits.

James 1:18 NASB  In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures.

Matthew 5:22 NASB  “But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing,’ shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.

James 1:20 NASB  for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God.

Matthew 7:21-22 NASB  “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.  (22)  “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’

James 1:22 NASB  But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.

Matthew 7:1 NASB  “Do not judge so that you will not be judged.

James 2:4 NASB  have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil motives?

Matthew 5:3 NASB  “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

James 2:5 NASB  Listen, my beloved brethren: did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?

Matthew 5:25-26 NASB  “Make friends quickly with your opponent at law while you are with him on the way, so that your opponent may not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.  (26)  “Truly I say to you, you will not come out of there until you have paid up the last cent.

James 2:6 NASB  But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you and personally drag you into court?

Matthew 5:43 NASB  “You have heard that it was said, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR and hate your enemy.’

James 2:8 NASB  If, however, you are fulfilling the royal law according to the Scripture, “YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF,” you are doing well.

Matthew 5:17-20 NASB  “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.  (18)  “For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.  (19)  “Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.  (20)  “For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will

James 2:10 NASB  For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.

Matthew 5:21 NASB  “You have heard that the ancients were told, ‘YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER’ and ‘Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.’

Matthew 5:27 NASB  “You have heard that it was said, ‘YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY’;

James 2:11 NASB  For He who said, “DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY,” also said, “DO NOT COMMIT MURDER.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.

Matthew 5:7 NASB  “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

James 2:13 NASB  For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.

Matthew 7:21-23 NASB  “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.  (22)  “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’  (23)  “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.’

James 2:14 NASB  What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him?

Matthew 7:16-20 NASB  “You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they?  (17)  “So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit.  (18)  “A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit.  (19)  “Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.  (20)  “So then, you will know them by their fruits.

James 3:12 NASB  Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh.

Matthew 7:24-25 NASB  “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock.  (25)  “And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.

James 3:13 NASB  Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. (14) But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth… (17) But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.

Matthew 5:9 NASB  “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

James 3:18 NASB  And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Matthew 5:21-30 NASB  “You have heard that the ancients were told, ‘YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER’ and ‘Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.’  (22)  “But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing,’ shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell….  (27)  “You have heard that it was said, ‘YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY’;  (28)  but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.  (29)  “If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.  (30)  “If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell.

James 4:2 NASB  You lust and do not have; so yo commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask.

Matthew 6:7-9 NASB  “And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words.  (8)  “So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.  (9)  “Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.

James 4:3 NASB  You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.

Matthew 5:27 NASB  “You have heard that it was said, ‘YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY’;

James 4:4 NASB  You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

Matthew 5:3 NASB  “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:5 NASB  “Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.

James 4:6 NASB  But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.”

Matthew 5:8 NASB  “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

James 4:8 NASB  Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Matthew 5:4 NASB  “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

James 4:9 NASB  Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom.

Matthew 5:8 NASB  “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

James 4:10 NASB  Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.

(20)  “For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

James 4:11 NASB  Do not speak against one another, brethren. He who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge of it.

Matthew 7:1 NASB  “Do not judge so that you will not be judged.

James 4:12 NASB  There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and to destroy; but who are you who judge your neighbor?

Matthew 6:34 NASB  “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

James 4:13 NASB  Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.”

Matthew 6:18-20 NASB  so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.  (19)  “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  (20)  “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal;

James 5:2 NASB  Your riches have rotted and your garments have become moth-eaten. (3) Your gold and your silver have rusted; and their rust will be a witness against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have stored up your treasure!

Matthew 7:22 NASB  “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’

James 5:7 NASB  Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until it gets the early and late rains.

Matthew 5:12 NASB  “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

James 5:10 NASB  As an example, brethren, of suffering and patience, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

James 5:11 NASB  We count those blessed who endured. You have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord’s dealings, that the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful.

Matthew 5:33-37 NASB  “Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, ‘YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FALSE VOWS, BUT SHALL FULFILL YOUR VOWS TO THE LORD.’  (34)  “But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,  (35)  or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, or by Jerusalem, for it is THE CITY OF THE GREAT KING.  (36)  “Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.  (37)  “But let your statement be, ‘Yes, yes’ or ‘No, no’; anything beyond these is of evil.

James 5:12 NASB  But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment.
