Matthew 21:12-13 – Why Did Jesus Cleanse the Temple?

When Jesus cleansed the temple, what was He doing? Obviously, He was removing the inward spiritual filth that contradicted the outward appearance of God’s glory (Jer.7). Hypocrisy is such a sin. But notice Jesus does this after riding into Jerusalem on a donkey. That act fulfilled the prophecy of Israel’s coming king (Zech.9:9); an event all four biographers record (Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-44 and John 12:12-19,). All four biographers also include Jesus cleansing the temple. John at the beginning (John 2:13–16) and the others at the end (Matthew 21:12–17,  Mark 11:15–19, 11:27–33, Luke 19:45–48, 20:1–8). Why? In 2 Chronicles 29, in Hezekiah’s restoration, the priests cleanse the temple. The coming king is also coming as a priest. Jesus is our king, and our purifier.
