A Harmony of the Lord Supper Accounts

                               The Lord’s Supper: The Accounts and Proper Order[1]

The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether or not the added information concerning the “passover” cup serves a dual purpose spiritually connecting the passover of old and this new supper.  If this “passover” cup bridges both suppers, then we can scripturally call the Lord’s supper our passover meal.  Also, as a side note, it illuminates another scriptural order to expedite this memorial meal.

We’ll begin with a side-by-side comparison of the four pertaining texts.

       Luke 22:14-20

14When the hour had come, He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him.

15And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer;

16for I say to you, I shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”

17And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He said, “Take this and share it among yoursleves;

18for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now until the kingdom of God comes.”

19And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, he broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”

20And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant     in My blood.

      Matthew 26:26-29

26While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, he broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”

27And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you;

28for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many forgiveness of sins.

29“But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day which I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”

         Mark 14:22-25

22While they were eating, He took some bread, and after a blessing He broke it; and gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is My body.”

23And when He had taken a cup,  and given thanks, He gave it to them; and they all drank from it.

24And He said to them, “This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.

25“Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

  1 Corinthians 11:23-26

23For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread;

24and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”

25In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

26For as often as you eat this break and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.”

            Now that we have seen the four texts juxtaposed, lets focus on the text in Luke with appropriate questions and notes added within the text.

 14When the hour had come, He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him.

15And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer;

16for I say to you, I shall never again eat it [Does this signal the end of the Passover except for the traditional final “Cup of Blessing?”] until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” [ Is Jesus saying He will never again eat the passover because it is part of the old covenant, or is He saying He will eat of the Passover again after it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God which then gives the Passover a new spiritual aspect being under the new covenant?]

17And when He had taken [dechomai (1209)] a [Is there any significance to the indefinite article here versus the definite article before cup in v.20?] cup [ Is this cup only part of the Passover, or does it serve as the bridge connecting the O.T. Passover to the N.T. Communion (Passover)?] and given thanks [(2168)], He said, “Take this and share [Does this mean they drank it at this time or simply emptied the contents out of the container being passed around into their own containers?] it among yoursleves;

18for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now until the kingdom of God comes.”

19And when He had taken some bread and given thanks [2168], he broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”

20And in the same way He took the [definite article] cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.
