Jude 4 – False Doctrine Leads to False Morality

Commonly, religious people claim America needs to get back to God. They distance themselves from the morally irresponsible who distance themselves from God’s moralities. They worry as the irreligious and anti-religious wreak havoc upon our country and ethical sensibilities. Yet, ironically societal irresponsibility begins with false religion and its false doctrines unknowingly and innocently promoting irresponsibility.

Liberal society excuses, “It’s not my fault, its society’s fault.” False doctrinal irresponsibility proclaims, “It’s not my fault, its Adam’s fault.”  Both blame others for their individual conditions and supposedly inability to act differently.

Liberal society excuses, “Bad behavior is genetic, people are born alcoholics and adulterers.” False doctrinal irresponsibility proclaims, “We inherit depravity and are born totally depraved.” Both blame the way they are by blaming the way they are born.

One can view this short analysis as a sociological oversimplification. But who would argue against the axiom that as the individual goes, so goes society. And apparently, as religion goes, so does society and the individual.

No wonder the Bible often connects false morality to false doctrine (Jude 4). “As a man thinks, so he is” (Prov.23:7). In all sincerity, religious false doctrines of individual irresponsibility are one cause for societal irresponsibility. Not only does America need to get back to God, so do the doctrines of Christianity.

  1. Jeremy says:

I agree there is far too much tendency for Christians to look outside the church and latch on woefully to those individuals who wish to do it harm as the primary cause for decline in the country and the church. But I’m reminded of Proverbs 18:9 – “One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys.” The end result of Christian laziness is the same as any anti-Christ.
