1 Peter 3; 2 Peter 3 – Water Is Essential to God’s Theology

According to Peter, water plays an important role in God’s theology. God’s word says the earth was made from water and was destroyed by water (2 Peter 3:3-6). So water is literally part of both physical creation and destruction. Not coincidentally, both of those times the world was immersed in water. Corresponding to that reality, the promise of Jesus’ second coming is assured, involving spiritual creation, physical destruction and recreation of the heavens and earth (2 Peter 3:7-15). Noah was saved through water from the destruction of the world (1 Peter 3:20). Corresponding to that baptism now saves us through the resurrection of Jesus (1 Peter 3:21). Not coincidentally baptism means immersion and Jesus arose from an entombment. While people keep arguing over the essentially of water and immersion, God has used literal water from creation, to destruction, to salvation. How important is water to our theology?
